Very few headsets out there are “true” surround sound. Most are traditional stereo headphones with “virtual surround sound” — a process that adds depth and directionality, but delivers it through two speakers. Headphones like Tritton’s and Psyko’s actually use multiple drivers to simulate being in a room with, say, five speaker channels and a subwoofer. They’ve had mixed success, but maybe Razer will have more luck. Their upcoming Tiamat headset uses no less than 10 individual drivers (5 in each earpiece) to produce what they are saying is a world-first 7.1 sound experience.
Razer swung out a wide range of gaming hardware and accessories on Tuesday that included a few extras for Apple users. For everyone, the Tiamat 7.1 is billed as the first true 7.1-channel surround sound headset. By packing five drivers in each earpiece and coordinating their output, it can replicate not just the seven main satellite points but the subwoofer channel as well. Owners can individually adjust the output of each channel and revert to a regular stereo signal if they like.
A companion stereo-only headset, the Tiamat 2.2, has four drivers, half of which are focused on bass. Either headset has a boom microphone for voice chat, and the 7.1 has an elaborate in-line remote to help handle the extra audio channels.
The two Tiamat sets are platform-independent and should be available worldwide in the fall.
Side-by-side with the headsets are special editions of much of its line to mark the October 25 launch of Battlefield 3. New versions of its BlackWidow game keyboard, Imperator mouse, and Onza Xbox 360 gamepad are functionally the same but carry the game’s artwork. The Scarab mat as well as a BF3 Messenger Bag for up to 15-inch notebooks and an iPhone 4 Protection Case are also available.
Prices start off at $20 for the iPhone 4 case and move up to $40 for the Scarab, $60 for the Onza, $80 each for the Imperator and Messenger Bag, and $140 for the BlackWidow. All of the limited runs will ship the same day as the game.
